Friends,
The following is the latest information concerning your Village:
1. Construction:
Last evening, Monday 27 June, an extensive tour and explanation of the construction footprint took place. In bullet format, the following was learned:
a. Completion is on schedule for the end of September. All roads to include the frontage roads and exits will be open to all traffic. The explanation and tour coincide with the completion date barring any un-forseen catastrophe similar to the 2484 bridge last year. It is coming together.
b. The next roads to be open are:
(1) Thursday night the 2484 north exit by Holiday Inn Express will enter the new frontage road. The 4-way stop sign will be moved to accommodate the opening of the frontage road. Disruption should be at a minimum.
(2) Also, Thursday evening, the frontage road going south (toward Austin) will open completely from Thomas Arnold Bridge to the Holland Road Bridge. Traffic will be able to travel on both frontage road lanes.
c. In the next 2-3 weeks, you will see much dirt being removed from the East side of I-35 going north toward Waco between Thomas Arnold Bridge and the new Salado Plaza Bridge. In most places, at least 5 feet of dirt must be removed in preparation of completing this segment of I-35. As you know, heavy construction is currently taking place in this area.
d. The east wall of Salado Plaza Bridge (black plastic and 2X4s extending the air) is extensively being worked. In the days to come, you will see additional shoring done on the wall as it is prepared for completion.
The Salado Plaza and Main Street intersection will remain as it is but there will be extensive construction around it. Please be careful in this area.
e. There are three major areas of construction to be completed by the end of September:
(1) The Salado Plaza Bridge Wall on the East Side and the Salado Plaza Intersection.
(2) The frontage road on the west side from the new Lampasas River frontage road bridges to the Thomas Arnold Bridge. Traffic will not be allowed to travel on the newly completed 2484 Bridge until this frontage road is completed.
(3) The long exit from I-35 to Thomas Arnold. However, the entrance to I-35 South toward Austin from the frontage road in front of CEFCO will be completed in the next month. This will greatly improve the flow of traffic. No longer will a traveler have to cross Thomas Arnold in order to enter I-35 South. It will ease that major intersection.
f. Please be patient, we are almost there.
2. On 7 July, during the regularly scheduled Board of Aldermen meeting, the BOA will consider the contract between Stagecoach Inn and the Village. It is in the final stages and should be ready for signing very soon. Refurbishing of the Stagecoach Inn is on schedule.
3. The Candy Shack has moved into the building across from Stagecoach Inn. The pink balloons outside will welcome you.
There is much happening the Village. Read this blog frequently.

Latest Construction Changes, 18 June, Saturday
Friends,
(1) Please be patient with the I-35 construction road changes. At first, it is confusing, but once traveled, it becomes easier.
As we get closer to construction completion, there will be more inconveniences and frustrations. To complete the work, certain traffic changes, road work, bridge completion, and other "fixes" have to be done. If not, the frustration will be extended along with the construction completion time.
Best guidance: when a change is posted or mentioned, take a friendly drive and see what the changes involve. It is realized that some of these changes occur during work and it is impossible to do so. Always have a back-up plan that you know will work. And remember: "this too shall pass."
Here is one for this Sunday night, 19 June:
The opening of the FM 2484 northbound exit ramp is planned to occur this coming Sunday night, June 19th.
Here are a few other construction items from TxDoT's leadership:

Here are a few other construction items from TxDoT's leadership:
"It is confirmed sidewalk will be placed along the northbound frontage road from the library to FM 2484.
Safety lighting will be installed as part of the IH 35 contract. Safety lighting includes:
· lights under the bridges at Thomas Arnold, Salado Plaza and FM 2484
· illumination at the frontage road intersections at Thomas Arnold and FM 2484
· illumination at each exit and entrance ramp
The contractor will construct the gateway sign foundations and install the artwork and letter made available by the Village. This is in accordance with the executed agreement between the Village and TxDOT in 2013."
The project is coming together and so is completion.
2. Got that Hound Dog cleaned, dressed, and taught a few tricks?
This is the day -- DOG DAZE IS HERE!!! STARTS AT 10 A.M. -- AND GOES TO 3 P.M. FUN! FUN! FUN!
Casper Hound Dog is excited. He keeps asking about the special treats and how much they cost. Also, if any of his friends are going to come.

Salado Plaza Road under the Salado Plaza Bridge is Open
Friends,
Salado Plaza Road is connected -- east and west.
Be careful. It will take some time to get use to it. There are 4-way stop signs.
We are one-step closer to construction ending. This was a major accomplishment. The final steps of construction completion can begin.
Construction completion is on schedule -- September or October.

"I wish you enough" this Father's Day
To all of you, Happy Father's Day.
To all of you -- not just men but all of you. At one time or another we, regardless of gender, have been a Father or a Mother to someone.
Steve Gilliland's "Making a Difference," puts Father's Day in the right perspective:
Recently, I overheard a father and daughter in their last moments together at the airport. Standing near the gate, they hugged and the father said, "I love you and I wish you enough."
The daughter replied, "Dad, our life together has been more than enough. Your love is all I ever needed. I wish you enough, too."
. . . . When you were saying good bye, I heard you say to your daughter. May I ask what that means?
The father replied, "When we said I wish you enough, we wanted the other person to have a life filled with just enough things to sustain them."
The father continued sharing the following as if he was reciting it from memory:
"I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright no matter how gray the day may appear.
I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun even more.
I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive and everlasting.
I wish enough pain so that even the smallest of joys in life may appear bigger.
I wish you enough gain to satisfy you wanting.
I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess.
I wish you enough hellos to get you through the final goodbye."
To all of you . . . "I wish you enough" this Father's Day, 19 June 2016.

Annual Newsletter April 2016
President’s Message
The Salado Cemetery Association had another successful year of taking care
of the cemetery due to the dedication of our Friends and Board of Trustees. The cemetery grounds are mowed and trimmed several
times a year to keep it well maintained.
Our investments are constantly monitored and remain sound. Every year the Memorial Day Service is well
planned to ensure a meaningful service for the entire community. People inquiring about available lots are
helped with their needs throughout the year.
And, the appropriate flags remain flying 365 days a year (366 days this
year). Our board officers are doing a
wonderful job of performing their duties during meetings and between meetings. Even though MaryBelle Brown, Vice-President, has
not been able to attend our meetings, she is still on our Board of Trustees and
is missed. At this time I want to thank Apple Johnson for
her years of service on the board and want to welcome Jack Hardin to the board
as he takes her place. I am thankful for
the Cemetery Association Friends and Trustees for their continued stewardship
of the Salado Cemetery, and look forward to their support for years to come.

Historic Old
Salado Graveyard Walking Tour
On the dusky evening of Saturday, November 7, 2015, the Salado pioneers
who are buried in the Historic Salado Graveyard came to life and told their
stories. They told how they came to
Texas, when they came to Salado, and how they served their community and their
country. Some told of other relatives
who are buried next to them. Some told
all; others kept their secrets buried.
Salado Historical Society and Tablerock sponsored a walking
tour of the Old Salado Graveyard to introduce visitors to the historic people
buried in the Historic Salado Graveyard on Baines Street. The program was titled “Our Salado Heritage
Speaks” referring to the lives of Salado settlers buried in the Old Graveyard
who had their biographies presented by historical reenactors. The program began at dusk and concluded
before dark. Sixteen early pioneers designated
historically significant to the founding and early settlement of Salado were
the focus of the walking tour. The early
pioneers on the tour were: Col. Hermon
Aiken, Dr. Welborn & Louisa Barton,
Captain Milton Damron, Rev. James &
Fannie Ferguson (parents of Pa Ferguson), Capt. Robert Bonner Halley, Dr.
Samuel Jones, Professor James Lowry
Smith, James Anderson, Rev. George Washington Baines, Dr. Benjamin McKie,
Archibald J. Rose, Leroy A. Griffith, John Paine, John Wesley Ray, Charley
Schoepf, and Emily Bumpass Stockton. Besides being noted Salado pioneers, these
individuals made significant contributions to the educational, religious,
political, and civic lives of people in the county and the State of Texas.
Salado Historical Society and
Tablerock are planning another walking tour this year on October 1, 2016. The plan is to have more historic people on
the tour. You are invited to come out
for an interesting afternoon to meet our early pioneers and their families. This is an excellent way to learn Salado’s
history in a short period of time while being entertained by the historical reenactors.
Coins on
Headstones and What They Mean
If you see coins on the headstones of your
veteran, you need to know what they represent.
A coin left on a headstone lets the deceased soldiers family know that
somebody stopped by to pay their respect.
Leaving a penny means you visited.
A nickle means that you and the deceased soldier trained at boot camp
together. If you served with the
soldier, you leave a dime. A quarter is
very significant because it means that you were there when that soldier
died. This is a moving tradition to let
family members know their veteran is not forgotten, but their memory lives on
with their comrads in arms.
Pipes on Grave
Sites Still Important
Last year we told you about the plastic
pipes beside veterans’ headstones and what we use them for: U.S. Flags.
We would still like you to let us know if the pipe is cracked or missing
from your veteran’s grave site so we can replace it. Flags
will be placed by headstones on Friday, May 27 in preparation for the Memorial
Day Service
Memorial Day
Service, Monday, May 30th
The Salado
Cemetery Association will host the annual Memorial Day Service at 9:30 a.m. on Monday,
May 30th at the Historic
Salado Cemetery on Baines St. Everyone
is invited to honor our veterans on this special day and pay tribute to their
service to our country.
The purpose of
the Memorial Day ceremony is to remember the veterans buried not just in Salado
Cemetery but in all of the Salado-area cemeteries, including family and church
cemeteries, by a roll call of their names.
All Veteran’s grave sites will have flags placed on them. The Veterans are from the Texas Revolutionary
War, Early Day Rangers, Home Guard, Indian Wars, Mexican War, Confederate and
Union Armies, Spanish American War, WWI and II, Korean War, Vietnam War, and
from peace time service.
The Memorial
Day ceremony will consist of: the Bell
County Sherriff’s Posse presenting the colors;
honors to each of the armed services;
a Commemorative Air Force fly-over; and a brass ensemble lead by Clayton
Capps playing music for the program. A
speaker will present brief remarks honoring veterans. Bryan
Fritch will read the roll call of veterans’ names this year. Taps will be played at the conclusion of the
ceremony.
Light
refreshments will be served following the closing of the Memorial Day
ceremony. Seating will be provided by
the Village of Salado. Guests are
reminded to bring umbrellas since the event is held outside. We hope to see you at the Memorial Day
ceremony on Monday, May 30, 2016. at 9:30 a.m.
Gift of Flag:
A US Flag was donated
to the cemetery by Joy Aiken in memory of her father Dr. C. H. Aiken’s
85th birthday. The flag was
flown over the U.S. Capitol. Dr. C. H. Aiken is buried in the Hodge
Addition. There are several Aikens buried in the cemetery.
Plot/Space Exchange:
Over the years, families goals and ideas change; people move and
burial plans change, and they find themselves with space in a cemetery they no
longer plan to use. Many spaces at our cemetery are vacant and we do not
expect them to be used. We would like all the spaces to be filled, thus
making better utilization of the cemetery plots. If you or your
parents/grandparents or others purchased space in the cemetery that you no
longer plan to use, we suggest you donate it back to the Cemetery
Association. Any donation of property should be tax deductible and
negates your need to try and find a buyer of the plot. You must have the
original certificate for the space or be authorized to made such a
transaction. Contact the cemetery staff to make a donation of spaces that
will not be utilized by you or your family.

repurchase price is $200/grave site, in pairs of two. If you would like
to list your grave site for sale, the association will maintain a listing of
lots for sale. The charge by the association for a sale through the
listing is $250 per grave site sold. Contact Stephen Peters at salado.cemetery@yahoo.com for information regarding the sale or repurchase
