Annual Newsletter                                                                         April  2016

President’s Message
The Salado Cemetery Association had another successful year of taking care of the cemetery due to the dedication of our Friends and Board of Trustees.  The cemetery grounds are mowed and trimmed several times a year to keep it well maintained.  Our investments are constantly monitored and remain sound.  Every year the Memorial Day Service is well planned to ensure a meaningful service for the entire community.  People inquiring about available lots are helped with their needs throughout the year.  And, the appropriate flags remain flying 365 days a year (366 days this year).  Our board officers are doing a wonderful job of performing their duties during meetings and between meetings.  Even though MaryBelle Brown, Vice-President, has not been able to attend our meetings, she is still on our Board of Trustees and is missed.   At this time I want to thank Apple Johnson for her years of service on the board and want to welcome Jack Hardin to the board as he takes her place.  I am thankful for the Cemetery Association Friends and Trustees for their continued stewardship of the Salado Cemetery, and look forward to their support for years to come.

Historic Old Salado Graveyard Walking Tour
On the dusky evening of Saturday, November 7, 2015, the Salado pioneers who are buried in the Historic Salado Graveyard came to life and told their stories.  They told how they came to Texas, when they came to Salado, and how they served their community and their country.  Some told of other relatives who are buried next to them.  Some told all; others kept their secrets buried.
Salado Historical Society and Tablerock sponsored a walking tour of the Old Salado Graveyard to introduce visitors to the historic people buried in the Historic Salado Graveyard on Baines Street.  The program was titled “Our Salado Heritage Speaks” referring to the lives of Salado settlers buried in the Old Graveyard who had their biographies presented by historical reenactors.  The program began at dusk and concluded before dark.  Sixteen early pioneers designated historically significant to the founding and early settlement of Salado were the focus of the walking tour.  The early pioneers on the tour were:  Col. Hermon Aiken,  Dr. Welborn & Louisa Barton, Captain Milton Damron,   Rev. James & Fannie Ferguson (parents of Pa Ferguson), Capt. Robert Bonner Halley, Dr. Samuel Jones,  Professor James Lowry Smith, James Anderson, Rev. George Washington Baines, Dr. Benjamin McKie, Archibald J. Rose, Leroy A. Griffith, John Paine, John Wesley Ray, Charley Schoepf, and Emily Bumpass Stockton.  Besides being noted Salado pioneers, these individuals made significant contributions to the educational, religious, political, and civic lives of people in the county and the State of Texas.
Salado Historical Society and Tablerock are planning another walking tour this year on October 1, 2016.  The plan is to have more historic people on the tour.  You are invited to come out for an interesting afternoon to meet our early pioneers and their families.  This is an excellent way to learn Salado’s history in a short period of time while being entertained by the historical reenactors.

Coins on Headstones and What They Mean
If you see coins on the headstones of your veteran, you need to know what they represent.  A coin left on a headstone lets the deceased soldiers family know that somebody stopped by to pay their respect.  Leaving a penny means you visited.  A nickle means that you and the deceased soldier trained at boot camp together.  If you served with the soldier, you leave a dime.  A quarter is very significant because it means that you were there when that soldier died.  This is a moving tradition to let family members know their veteran is not forgotten, but their memory lives on with their comrads in arms.

Pipes on Grave Sites Still Important
Last year we told you about the plastic pipes beside veterans’ headstones and what we use them for:  U.S. Flags.  We would still like you to let us know if the pipe is cracked or missing from your veteran’s grave site so we can replace it.  Flags will be placed by headstones on Friday, May 27 in preparation for the Memorial Day Service

Memorial Day Service, Monday, May 30th
The Salado Cemetery Association will host the annual Memorial Day Service at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, May 30th  at the Historic Salado Cemetery on Baines St.   Everyone is invited to honor our veterans on this special day and pay tribute to their service to our country.
The purpose of the Memorial Day ceremony is to remember the veterans buried not just in Salado Cemetery but in all of the Salado-area cemeteries, including family and church cemeteries, by a roll call of their names.  All Veteran’s grave sites will have flags placed on them.  The Veterans are from the Texas Revolutionary War, Early Day Rangers, Home Guard, Indian Wars, Mexican War, Confederate and Union Armies, Spanish American War, WWI and II, Korean War, Vietnam War, and from peace time service.
The Memorial Day ceremony will consist of:  the Bell County Sherriff’s Posse presenting the colors;  honors to each of the armed services;  a Commemorative Air Force fly-over; and a brass ensemble lead by Clayton Capps playing music for the program.  A speaker will present brief remarks honoring veterans.   Bryan Fritch will read the roll call of veterans’ names this year.  Taps will be played at the conclusion of the ceremony.
Light refreshments will be served following the closing of the Memorial Day ceremony.  Seating will be provided by the Village of Salado.  Guests are reminded to bring umbrellas since the event is held outside.  We hope to see you at the Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, May 30, 2016. at 9:30 a.m.

Gift of Flag:  A US Flag was donated to the cemetery by Joy Aiken in memory of her father Dr. C. H. Aiken’s 85th birthday.  The flag was flown over the U.S. Capitol.  Dr. C. H. Aiken is buried in the Hodge Addition.  There are several Aikens buried in the cemetery.
Plot/Space Exchange:  Over the years, families goals and ideas change; people move and burial plans change, and they find themselves with space in a cemetery they no longer plan to use.  Many spaces at our cemetery are vacant and we do not expect them to be used.  We would like all the spaces to be filled, thus making better utilization of the cemetery plots.  If you or your parents/grandparents or others purchased space in the cemetery that you no longer plan to use, we suggest you donate it back to the Cemetery Association.  Any donation of property should be tax deductible and negates your need to try and find a buyer of the plot.  You must have the original certificate for the space or be authorized to made such a transaction.  Contact the cemetery staff to make a donation of spaces that will not be utilized by you or your family.

Repurchase/Sale of Plot:  The association will repurchase grave sites in pairs, no singles.  The repurchase price is $200/grave site, in pairs of two.  If you would like to list your grave site for sale, the association will maintain a listing of lots for sale.  The charge by the association for a sale through the listing is $250 per grave site sold.  Contact Stephen Peters at salado.cemetery@yahoo.com for information regarding the sale or repurchase of plot.
